During this very odd time. It’s even more important to have a great community of aspiring medics and mentors that will support in your application and beyond. I have done all the work for you and collated 6 online communities all aspiring medics should join now!
1. Medic mentor virtual medicine society
First, up on the list of 6 online communities all aspiring medics should join is: Medic Mentors VMS.
The virtual medicine society is enormous with thousands of students just like you from across the country! Once a week on Tuesday they join together to support each other and perfect their medical applications.
Society leaders write blog posts about wider reading and application preparation. These posts are used as discussion points, live in the meetings on Tuesdays.
The society share resources and learn from each other and also hear from guest speakers, from doctors to medical students.
Last year, I was involved in a fundraising project for the royal medical benevolent fund with the virtual medical society. This gave me loads to talk about on my persona statement. What’s more, is that they are running another fundraiser that you can get involved in now!
Medic mentor also offers a huge array of helpful services outside of the medical society to give you the absolute best chance at a career in medicine. You will be the first to know about these as a member of the virtual medical society!
2.Linkedin.
One of my top picks of the 6 online communities all aspiring medics should join is Linkedin!
I truly believe that all aspiring medics should join as soon as they realise they want to study medicine.
The first benefit of being on LinkedIn is connecting with a huge range of medical students and doctors across the country. I have used it to find guest speakers for my Instagram live streams, and connect with inspiring medical students.
Linkedin is a kind of scrapbook to build up all of your experiences, including your work experience and volunteering. It is a highly professional platform and showing off your strengths to doctors and others in the medical field has the potential to open up a huge array of possibilities for experiences and amazing fun.
This is one of the most efficient online communities that aspiring medics should join.
3.Instagram
Since beginning my journey with Medical Zoe I have met hundreds of like-minded aspiring medics and medical students over Instagram. It is a great community with an abundance of knowledge and advice as well as having mutual goals.
There are so many accounts run by individual people that I love, but here is one of my favourites:
We are medics.
We are medics is run by a group of medical students who provide free support for your application to medicine. They provide e-books and abundant resources to help you build the transferable skills you need. Furthermore, they do interactive lives and so much more to help you get your place at medical school.
There is so much great stuff on their Instagram so make sure you follow them and join their community.
4. ac medical mentors
Afro-Caribbean mentors is for anyone with African/ Caribbean heritage.
As we know there is a lot of work to be done in this country to widen participation in medicine.
This one-on-one mentoring scheme run by motivated and enthusiastic students and health care professionals.
Their mission is to encourage you to build your confidence and realise your potential.
They also facilitate your development through incredible conferences, workshops and exam preparation courses.
It doesn’t end when you get into medical school either, they also offer continual support for those who are currently working in healthcare professions!
They now also provide support for those applying to dental school too!
5.Youtube
I am sure that many of you will already be aware of what an incredible platform youtube is for helping you with your education and your medical application.
I just wanted to emphasise that by sharing some of my favourite youtube communities for your application:
- Journey to med
- Faye bate
- Ali Abdaal
- Everyday anna
- Kharma medic
These channels all give a unique insight into a medics life.
They also share tips for how to do well in your A-levels, boost productivity and smash your medical interviews and personal statements. I mean, what more could you want?
Subscribing and interacting with them is a really positive way to find support during the application process.
6. Medical Zoe!
Of course, I had to plug this platform as well!
I have been privileged enough to receive incredible mentoring and access to opportunities to build my application. So I want to pass this all on to you!
In addition to weekly posts on this blog about everything you need to know to make a successful application, I run an Instagram account where I post informational videos, live streams with doctors and medical students as well as twice-weekly posts with accessible information to help you secure your space at medical school.
If that wasn’t enough, I run an exclusive community in the form of my email list where you can access additional resources, my time and personalised tips as well as being the first to know about any updates and opportunities that I find.
You can schedule a zoom call for tips and personal advice for your medical journey, or you can just stay in the loop! I’m here to provide as much or as little help as you need.
If any of this takes your fancy then make sure to follow me on Instagram, and join the Medical Zoe exclusive email list to level up your application.
